Notebook is a common term used in Taiwan.
When you mention a notebook, most people know what you are talking about.
However, when I came to United States, this term bothered me very much.
Once, I told my friend my notebook broken, and he was confused.
For him, a notebook is book he uses to take notes.
As for a computer, he will call it a laptop.
Therefore, I told my Taiwanese friends about the usage of laptop.
No one uses notebook instead of laptop in America.
Later, my Taiwanese friend gave me a website shows an advertisement.
That advertisement is original from U.S., and it uses notebook to name the computer.
I didn’t know what to say, and then I asked my teacher.
She said she will have the same response as my American friend.
For young generation, they might have different points of view.
Since they are more familiar with the advertisement term, they know it.
In the future, the frequency of using laptop and notebook might be the same.
By the way, there are more and more people using laptop in class.
Many classmates use laptop to take notes rather than pencil and paper.
Laptop is likely to replace “paper” notebook.
Laptop is an interesting word.
It is a compound of two words, lap and top.
It shows how American people usually use their laptop on the bus.
When there is no desk or table, lap is a flap for a computer.
When people know laptop, they must understand what desktop is.
Desktop is a computer you put on your desk.
It is hard to carry and operates with a big case.
